Review: Tomcats Screaming Outside - Roland Orzabal
Review from www.adhoc.co.uk
You know those reviews that say ‘Former-singer/songwriter-of-major-band strikes out in a radical and challenging new direction’? This is not one of those reviews. By the chorus of the first song, you are in no doubt that you’re dealing with the creative force behind Tears For Fears. Despite dancey leitmotifs and ethnic samples (on Hypnoculture) most things brought to mind are themselves very much of the 80s – Simple Minds, Eurythmics, Depeche Mode. A mixed blessing, maybe, but the big sound is great (Under Ether especially). For The Love Of Cain certainly shows Richard Ashcroft how it should be done, while Dandelion demonstrates the direction Oasis should have taken five years ago.
